The sound of the Mostviertel

The Schagerl music instrument manufactory in Mank
‘Mank is the centre of the trumpet making world!’, jazz music star James Morrison once said. Back in the 1960s, Karl Schagerl Senior opened a music shop and repair workshop in Mank, which quickly became a centre of the vibrant brass music scene. He soon became interested not only in repairing the instruments, but also in constantly improving them in close co-operation with the customers. The first attempts to make his own instruments encouraged the tinkerer and opened up new perspectives. The business, built on the mighty traditional foundation of the Mostviertel brass music culture, was gradually taken to new dimensions by the two sons Karl and Robert. The Schagerl brothers intensified production and, at the same time, their contact with the best in their field and international stars.
The film chroniclers visited the manufactory, which is still based in Hörsdorf in Manko and produces over 700 instruments a year for the world market. The way in which a close-knit team produces instruments by hand in an almost symbiotic collaboration with top musicians can certainly be described as a total work of art.
A highlight of the film is a short studio session with stars from Schagerl's circle of friends. Hans Gansch, Selina Ott and Matthias Kernstock celebrate the sound of the Mostviertel, which conquered the world from the Manker Werkstätte, right in the Werkstätten building.
