Gerald was
born on September 23, 1988, in San Cristóbal, Táchira, Venezuela, and grew up
in a family of musicians in Caracas. He began his musical education at the age
of five, and started studying trumpet at seven with Rubén Capriles at La
Rinconada de Caracas. The following year, he studied trumpet under Maestro
Walter Pino and soon joined the Youth Orchestra of La Rinconada under the
direction of Eliécer Sánchez. In 1998, he moved to the Youth Orchestra of
Chacao, where he continued studying trumpet with José Rodríguez.
In 1999,
Gerald joined the Children's Orchestra of Caracas, conducted by Rubén Cova,
where he performed as a soloist with Antonio Vivaldi’s "Concerto for Two
Trumpets." That same year, he became a member of the National Children's
Orchestra of Venezuela, touring globally to countries including Germany, Chile,
Argentina, Uruguay, Austria, the USA, and Italy. During this time, he also
participated in masterclasses with Venezuelan and international musicians,
including Gabor Tarkovi, Randy Brecker, and Wynton Marsalis.
In 2003,
Gerald joined the Youth Orchestra of Caracas and became the principal trumpet
player. He later joined the Simón Bolívar Youth Symphony Orchestra and
performed under renowned conductors such as Simon Rattle and Claudio Abbado.
These engagements took him on tours across more than 50 countries in Europe,
Asia, the United Kingdom, Russia, the United States, and South America. After
some time, he left the orchestra to focus on his career as a solo artist and
singer-songwriter.
Gerald was
also a member of the Venezuela Trumpet Quartet, which participated in many
prestigious festivals such as the Mozarteum Salzburg and the Royal Festival
Hall London. With this quartet, he recorded the album "Manteca." He
was also a member of the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble, led by Thomas Clamor of the
Berlin Philharmonic, with whom he performed numerous concerts worldwide and
released a DVD with EuroArts and a CD with EMI Classics.
As the only
Latin American member of the European Brass Ensemble, led by Maestro Clamor, he
participated in the recording of the album "In Residence" in early
2016, recorded under the GENUIN label in Bad Frederburg, Germany, and nominated
for the International Classical Music Award 2017.
In addition
to his classical trumpet education, Gerald entered the world of jazz at an
early age. He participated in various national and international festivals and
collaborated with jazz greats like Bob Mintzer and James Morrison. Gerald leads
the "Charangoza All Star," a group that brings together top Latin
American and Afro-Cuban musicians.
Gerald has
also succeeded as a soloist, releasing two albums: "My Favorite
Standards" (2013) and "Melodies For The Soul" (2015), both
well-received by the audience and critics. The latter earned him six
nominations at the Venezuelan Music Pepsi Award, winning three. His third
album, "Transparente," is set to be released at the end of 2017 and
includes songs like "Almas Gemelas" and "Se Llama Amor."
Gerald is part of the "Schagerl Artists," a group sponsored by the
renowned Austrian metal instrument brand, making him not only the youngest of
this select group but also the first Latin American. His discography is
distributed internationally by EBD Records.
