The MEINL Sonic Energy Steel Tongue Drum is a rich, full-sounding instrument that can be played either with the hands or the pair of rubber mallets provided. Precisely crafted to deliver beautiful, expressive melodies, these drums are a fantastic piece for solo performances and are equally well suited for ensemble use.

The steel tongue drum is basically nothing more than a hollow metal body with a resonance hole on the underside, to which the steel tongue drum owes its long sustain. The name steel tongued drum is no coincidence, but can be explained quite simply by its structure: There are between seven and ten tone fields arranged in a circle around the centre of the striking surface, which look like tongues. Depending on the shape and size of the tongues, different pitches are produced. The number of these tongues tells you the number of notes that can be played with this steel tongue drum. Meinl Sonic Energy Steel Tongue Drums all have eight tongues in three different scale types:
Minor scales: minor scales produce a mystical, thoughtful, almost melancholic sound.
Major scales: The sound character of steel tongue drums with major scales is described as upbeat and cheerful.
A-Akebono: Due to their relaxing and calming sound characteristics, these steel tongue drums are particularly popular with sound therapists.
