Thomas Hammerschmidt about his Schagerl Berlin Heavy Z Bb-Trumpet Model

How long have you been playing Schagerl trumpets and how did you get into it?
When I started my trumpet studies with Prof. Uwe Köller at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in 1998, I was looking for a trumpet that met my expectations. I had already tested several trumpets from different manufacturers but had not yet found the right instrument. A good friend who was studying in Vienna with Professor Carole Dawn Reinhart raved about the Schagerl Bb trumpet he had recently bought. I then made my way to Mank and felt well advised in Hörsdorf from the very first moment. The staff at Schagerl took my concerns seriously and treated me with respect. I was very impressed by their courtesy and professionalism and I still have very positive memories of them today. By the end of the day, I had found an instrument that suited me.
Who has influenced you the most over the past few years and what are you currently doing?
I learnt my first notes on the trumpet from my father, Gustav Hammerschmidt, and later I enjoyed lessons with Mr Franz Steiner at the Wr. Neustadt music school. Later, Prof. Uwe Köller (University of Music and Performing Arts Graz) and Mr Tamas Velenczei (Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra) made a significant contribution to the fact that I am now able to earn my living as a professional musician. Their professional, pedagogical and personal expertise played a decisive role in shaping my path to becoming a professional musician. My time at the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the ten years that I was able to play in the Orchestra Mozart under the direction of Maestro Claudio Abbado certainly also had a great influence on me and my style of playing the trumpet in the orchestra today. The sound of the trumpet section of the Berlin Philharmonic still resonates today. I still play the trumpet enthusiastically as principal trumpet at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf/Duisburg and in the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
Why do you trust Schagerl trumpets and which instruments do you currently play?
I currently play a Schagerl C trumpet (Vienna model) from 2001 and a Schagerl Bb trumpet (Berlin Heavy Z model). The Schagerl instruments really fulfil my needs as an orchestral musician. The easy response, the overtone-rich sound and the excellent intonation are the main reasons why I have been playing Schagerl instruments for over 20 years. The Schagerl master workshop and its employees still live their company philosophy for me after 20 years: professionalism, commitment, customer-centredness and friendliness. Thank you!
