Spring cleaning for your instrument

How to look after your brass instrument properly!
Spring is here - time for a spring clean! But it's not just your home that needs a clean - your brass instrument also deserves an extra dose of care. Regular cleaning and maintenance ensures a fresh sound and a longer life. Find out how to take optimum care of your instrument here!
1. Cleaning the inside: Extends the life of your instrument
Deposits on the inside impair its function.
- Rinse out your instrument with lukewarm water every few months. We recommend ‘Meinlschmidt Hydro Jet S1’ for easy cleaning in between
- Remove stubborn deposits inside the instrument. We recommend the cleaning concentrate ‘La Tromba In-Clean’ with its excellent cleaning effect and pleasantly fresh fragrance.
- Use a cleaning brush to remove deposits from the inner tubes and slides. We recommend the ‘aS Spiral Cleaner’.
- Mouthpieces should be rinsed with warm water after each use and cleaned regularly with a mouthpiece brush. For more intensive cleaning, we recommend the ‘La Tromba MPC Clean / Mouthpiece Cleaner’.
2. Valves and joints: so that everything runs smoothly
The valves and joints are the heart of your instrument. Make sure they work perfectly:
- Depending on the type of instrument, apply a special valve and mechanism oil.
- Make sure that no fluff or dirt particles get into the mechanics.
3. Lubricate the slides: This keeps everything smooth
- Main tuning slides and valve slides should remain smooth. To do this, apply some slide grease and move the slide back and forth several times. We recommend our ‘Schagerl special slide grease’, which is characterised by its high durability and excellent adhesion. For the 3rd cable, ‘JM Bearing & Linkage Oil 13.5’ has proven its worth.
4. Exterior cleaning: For a gleaming appearance
A clean body not only looks good, but also extends the life of the surface treatment.
- For lacquered surfaces, use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove fingerprints and dust. For more stubborn dirt, we recommend ‘JM Instrumental Cleaner’, which removes the dirt and protects the surface permanently.
- Silver or gold-plated instruments benefit from a special silver or gold cleaner. We recommend ‘MUSICLEAN Gold & Silver Cleaner No. 5’, a mild cleaning concentrate.
A sparkling appearance guaranteed - in our YouTube channel we show you how to make silver-plated instruments shine in no time at all!
5. Storage: protection for your instrument
- Always store your instrument in a suitable case or gig bag.
- Avoid extreme temperatures and high humidity.
- After every game, it is important to remove condensation from the instrument and then air dry it.
Conclusion: Care is worth it!
A well-maintained brass instrument not only plays better, but also retains its value. Schedule regular maintenance sessions to enjoy your instrument for a long time.
