Schagerl History

As perhaps less well known, Musikhaus Schagerl used to be active in the production of string instruments, especially through my grandfather Karl Schagerl Sr. and my father Johann Schagerl. In addition to numerous violins, double basses and even two baroque viols, these two violas from 1990 stand out in particular. The measurements for the instruments were previously taken by my grandfather personally and by hand from Antonio Stradivari's viola known as the ‘Macdonald’, as he knew the owner of this viola at the time, the violist of the world-famous Amadeus Quartet, Peter Schidlof. In the years that followed, my father made the two excellent and beautiful replicas, whereby he decided in favour of a poplar back and sides instead of maple, which I find even more inspiring both tonally and visually. Peter Schidlof was no longer able to play or compare the violas personally, as he unfortunately died suddenly in 1987. The Stradivarius original from 1701 is available on the market today for 45 million US dollars. Our replicas, however, will hopefully remain in the family for generations to come.
