Mario Martos-Nieto - Schagerl Artist

How long have you been playing Schagerl trumpets?
I've been playing Schagerl trumpets since I started with the rotary valve trumpets. That was during my Erasmus year at Hansch Gansch in Salzburg. I remember it was a 2001 model (I think that was the name) and belonged to the university.
How did you come to Schagerl?
Hans of course played his ‘Hans Gansch’ model and I was immediately impressed by its sound (it has to be said that Hans also sounds incredible on his Chinese trumpet).
But this model was too big for me and I played on smaller trumpets at the beginning.
What instruments do you use?
At the moment I play Berlin Heavy Bb and C trumpets and I'm totally happy with them. They are instruments that produce a lot of colour in the sound and are not too dark and heavy.
In Spain I had only played on piston trumpets and I think that for someone like me, who has studied on completely different instruments, the change was relatively easy.
Who has influenced you in your career?
In my career I have a couple of trumpet players who have influenced me a lot.
One is, as I said, Hans. He was my first teacher with a long and international career and has actually spread my musical outlook a lot.
And the other one is Gabor Tarkövi. He was my mentor at the Karajan Academy and guided me through the transition from student to professional.
What was your musical career like?
I studied at the Real Conservatorio de Musica de Madrid and in 2012-2013 I was a student of Hans Gansch for a year. When I finished my Bachelor's degree in Madrid, I started my Master's degree with Andreas Öttl in Salzburg, but shortly afterwards I moved to Berlin when I won the audition for the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
Since 2016 I have been principal trumpet with the Munich Radio Orchestra and play regularly in many top German orchestras (Berlin Philharmonic, Bavarian State Opera, German Symphony Orchestra Berlin, etc.).
