Stefan Obmann

About the Artist

Stefan Obmann is one of the most versatile Austrian trombonists of his generation. Born in 1988 in St. Veit an der Glan in Carinthia, he began his musical training at the age of five at the Althofen Music School. He completed his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna under Dietmar Küblböck and Mark Gaal of the Vienna Philharmonic. His exceptional talent was recognised on several occasions even during his training. In 2006, he won the Anton Bruckner Competition organised by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in the ‘Best Young Trombonist’ category, and he was also awarded a prize at the Gradus ad Parnassum competition in 2011. As a sought-after orchestral musician, Stefan Obmann has performed with renowned ensembles such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, the Staatskapelle Berlin, the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, the Tonkünstler Orchestra Lower Austria and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. He has also performed at the Frankfurt Opera, the Vienna Volksoper and the Vienna State Opera, and has collaborated with internationally renowned conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Muti and Kirill Petrenko. 
In addition to his work as a soloist and orchestral musician, Stefan Obmann is deeply involved in the Austrian brass scene. He is the ensemble manager of the Trombone Attraction trombone quartet and the Vienna Brass Connection, playing a key role in shaping the development of innovative brass projects. Another focus of his artistic work lies in contemporary music. Stefan Obmann regularly collaborates with leading contemporary music ensembles such as the Klangforum Wien, the Ensemble XXI. Jahrhundert, the Ensemble Wiener Collage and the Schallfeld Ensemble Graz. He is also a member of PHACE, one of the most internationally successful and innovative ensembles for new music. Through his work as a trombonist, teacher, university lecturer and ensemble manager, Stefan Obmann is today one of the leading figures in the Austrian brass and music scene.
