Simon Zöchbauer

About the Artist

His passion for the trumpet was discovered at the age of nine when a brass band marched by him in New Orleans, paving his musical path. Over time, the musician, born in 1988 in Herzogenburg, explored a range of musical styles. He embarked on a career as a professional musician after winning the first prize with distinction at the national competition Prima La Musica 2003, which confirmed his belief in having found a form of artistic expression. His trumpet studies eventually took him from the Anton Bruckner University in Linz down the Danube to the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he completed his concert studies in 2015. Besides his engagement with classical music and its technical possibilities, Zöchbauer has delved into traditional music and its translation into the present. With his now internationally acclaimed ensemble "Federspiel," which has performed on the most established concert stages worldwide (Goldener Saal of the Vienna Musikverein, Berlin Philharmonie, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, and more), he explores roots and deeper strata. In his first solo project, which Zöchbauer debuted in March 2019, his compositions open up to contemporary and electronic impulses as well as influences from sacred music. With the release of the album "Achad" and, not least, by taking over as the artistic director of the Wellenklänge festival in Lunz am See since 2018, the present is increasingly emerging as the focal point of his artistic work. Zöchbauer's profound engagement with music and its creative conditions opens up spaces that project equally into the past and the future from the moment.
